    I am trying to do 1 a month this year. but a couple of months I have 2! In fact I have 2 this week! :)

    For the last few years now, a few friends and I have been averaging one 5K a month from March through November. This year I formally organized a running club at work with a commitment to run a minimum of five races each year. I will be running several 5Ks, the Utah Marathon Relay, the Dirty Dash, my first half marathon and my first full marathon – all to celebrate turning 50!

    I run for the pure joy and satisfaction that I get from running. So daily running is just that, however, I find races add that little bit of extra excitement to daily training. Races help me gage how well my training is succeeding. I’m amazed at how well the human body responds to being active. I started running 10 years ago and found out it helped solve my lower back problems, it then helped me lose weight, my mental attitude became so much better, and the positive results just kept coming. I’m 53 years old and I’ve completed 3 full marathons,6 half marathons, and 7 mountain steeple chases. I never thought that would be possible at my age. So my advice is to just get out there and have some fun, RUN!

    2010 was a typical year: 15 5K’s, Wasatch Back, Las Vegas Ragnar, 3 10K’s, Sapper Joe 15K, 3 half marathons.
    This year will be about the same.

    I have averaged about 1 race about every 3-4 weeks for the last five years. I mix it up with 5ks, 10ks, halfs, marathons, and relay races. Always gotta have something scheduled so I’m motivated to train.

    The cost of running the two marathons I currently manage to do is high enough for a graduate student living off of student loans. I keep the two to establish motivation & training goals, and the fees & related expenses for those usually come from savings & gifts. I’m hoping this magnificent M.F.A. will produce more income & more race entries!

    I plan at least one 5 k per month.. It keeps me running. I hope to be able to do at least one 1/2 this year. Wish me luck .
